Designing a commercial playground requires a delicate balance of form and function. So, what exactly goes into building a playground that can withstand decades of harsh weather and enthusiastic play? Let’s look at the materials that make up the modern playground.

The Skeleton of Play: Structural Materials
The longevity of a playground begins with its structural integrity. We engineer our above-ground features to survive everything from freezing northern winters to humid coastal air.

Interactive and Sculptural Elements
A modern playground utilizes a blend of modern composites, specialized ropes, and even artisan concrete to create diverse play experiences.

HDPE Play Panels: High-density polyethylene is used for interactive panels because it is colorfast, durable, and easy to clean.

Recycled Plastic Lumber: We utilize recycled plastics where appropriate to promote sustainability, but we use it selectively due to its natural tendency to expand and contract in extreme temperatures.

SteelCore Rope Systems: For composite structures, we use 16mm steel-core rope. For our signature rope structures, we use steel-cable-reinforced nylon rope for ultimate load-bearing durability.

StoneWood Concrete Play: These natural-looking play features are crafted using high-MPa concrete reinforced with glass fibers and custom-stained. Smaller pieces are cast-in-place for efficiency, while massive boulders and features are meticulously hand-sculpted.

Specialty Woods: For niche, nature-inspired projects, we incorporate beautiful, rot-resistant Western Red Cedar.

The Ground Game: Demystifying Surfacing
Playground surfacing isn't just about aesthetics; it is a highly engineered safety system. Below is a breakdown of our most popular surfacing options and how they perform.

1. Poured-in-Place (PIP) Rubber Surfacing
This is our most popular and versatile option. Installed at a 3 to 5-inch depth over a highly compacted aggregate base (98% SPD), PIP rubber provides exceptional accessibility. While many clients choose a black SBR base to manage costs, the surface can be completely customized with colored EPDM graphics or speckle textures. Note: PIP achieves its impact attenuation through compaction, meaning adding depth directly increases the safe fall height rating.

2. Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF)
Our second most popular option is installed at a 300mm (12-inch) depth. Once it reaches natural compaction, this CSA-tested and certified wood fiber becomes completely wheelchair accessible. Like PIP rubber, it relies on compaction to cushion falls safely.

3. Natural Round Rock (Playground Gravel)
Washed 10mm round rock is a traditional choice. However, unlike PIP or EWF, gravel achieves its impact attenuation through displacement (moving out of the way when a child lands). Because of this, adding more depth has diminishing returns on safety ratings.

What About Turf and Sand?
We frequently guide clients away from sand and artificial turf. Turf is notoriously difficult to maintain and inspect for hidden hazards. Instead, we recommend a granular green EPDM PIP design, which provides the vibrancy of grass with zero maintenance. Sand, on the other hand, acts like sandpaper on children's shoes, prematurely wearing down playground equipment and potentially voiding manufacturer warranties.

Finishing Touches and Safety Compliance
Our FallSAFE Rubber Products provide targeted protection in high-traffic zones, including bonded rubber mulch matting beneath swings and decorative solid rubber spheres.

Most importantly, every play feature we design and manufacture in our Southern Alberta facility—shipping anywhere across North America—strictly adheres to the CSA Z614-20 safety standard. Furthermore, all equipment satisfies Section 9 structural integrity requirements, either through rigorous physical testing or direct review by a professional Engineer.
