How to Replace Playground Swing Seats
How to replace commercial playground swing seats — belt, tot, soft-edge, and accessible — in-house, plus choosing the right hangers. Ships across the U.S. and Canada.
A worn or cracked swing seat is the most common playground repair — and one of the easiest to do in-house. BDI's commercial replacement swing seats ship across the U.S. and Canada and swap onto your existing swing beam in minutes. Here's how to do it safely.
Step 1 — Identify what you have
Check four things before you order:
- Seat style — belt, tot/full-bucket, soft-edge, or accessible.
- What it includes — a seat only (reuse your chains/hangers) or a complete package with chains and hangers.
- Beam size — hangers are made for a standard 3-1/2" OD beam; custom hangers for a 2-7/8" OD beam are also available, so tell us your beam size when you order.
- How it connects today — S-hooks or hammerlocks (this decides the tools you'll need; see Step 3).
Step 2 — Order the right replacement
- Belt seats — the standard flat seat for ages 5+.
- Tot seats — full-bucket seats that cradle younger children.
- Soft-edge seats — a forgiving edge for high-traffic sites.
- Accessible seats — supportive seating for inclusive play.
- Hangers — regular or wrap-free to match your beam.
Step 3 — Remove the old seat (tools depend on your connection)
With the swing area closed to children, disconnect the worn seat:
- S-hook connections — open the S-hooks with a set of S-hook pliers (we can supply these), swap the seat, and close them again.
- Hammerlock connections — easiest removal is with a specialized hammerlock tool, or clamp the hammerlock in a vise with the locking pin facing up and drive the pin out with a punch.
Inspect the hangers, chains, and beam for wear while you're in there.
Step 4 — Install the new seat
Attach the new seat to your chains (or hang the complete seat-and-chain package from the hangers), torque the hardware per the instructions, test-swing, confirm seat height and clearances, and reopen.
Don't forget the high-wear zone
The ground beneath swings wears faster than anywhere else on a playground. Pair a seat swap with resilient under-swing wear mats to protect your surfacing and cut future repairs.
Inclusive option: the saucer seat
Want more kids swinging together? The U-Swing Saucer Seat is a high-value, easy retrofit — it hangs from your chains with hammerlocks at each of the four connection points, so it drops onto an existing U-Swing without a new structure.
