Designing a Landmark: The New Banff Rotary Park Playground

When you’re building a playground in a UNESCO World Heritage site, the stakes are higher than your average park. You aren't just installing equipment; you’re curating a space that must honor the rugged beauty of Banff National Park while meeting some of the strictest municipal and federal design standards in Canada.

The newly completed project at Banff Rotary Park (conveniently located on Banff Ave, just steps from the Rundlestone Lodge and the Banff Ave Brewing Co.) is the result of years of collaborative planning between the Rotary Club, the Town of Banff, and Parks Canada.

The Challenge: Balancing Aesthetics and Accessibility

The Town of Banff has a unique mandate: 50% of the playground structure must be made of real wood. This requirement became the catalyst for the development of our CedarScape Collection.

By utilizing natural cedar, we created a "mountain-modern" aesthetic that feels like a natural extension of the surrounding peaks. Key features include:

The Log Jam Climb & Log Steppers: Mimicking a fallen forest floor to encourage balance and tactile play.

The Teepee & Log Bench: Creating "social pockets" for imaginative play.

The StoneWood Bear: A custom-crafted, glass-fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) sculpture that provides a whimsical "photo-op" for tourists and locals alike.

Innovative Surfacing: The Best of Both Worlds

One of the most complex hurdles of this installation was the surfacing. The Town of Banff initially requested standard wood mulch to maintain a rustic look. However, the Rotary Club prioritized longevity and ease of maintenance.

Our solution? Bonded Rubber Mulch.

The Result: A surfacing solution that looks like natural forest floor mulch but offers the superior fall protection, accessibility, and durability of rubber. It stays in place better than loose wood chips, making it a sustainable choice for high-traffic tourist areas.

From 20-Year-Old Roots to a Modern Hub

The previous playground served the community for over two decades, but it had outgrown its footprint. This total park overhaul included more than just play equipment—it integrated new trails, a shelter, and upgraded bathrooms to create a comprehensive family destination.

By blending our CedarScape line with high-end Blue Imp components—like our famous stainless steel slides and monkey boards—we’ve ensured that this park can withstand the harsh Alberta winters while providing "play-for-all" opportunities.
